Entry date: 6-10-2023 – Last Night and Random Thoughts – Letters to My Friends

Dear Friends,

Wow. Cherubs were killer last night. I also enjoyed Hot Probs quite a bit, too. The middle band, Rid of Me, didn’t do a lot for me but they seemed like nice people. Heavy and serious, for sure, but again, wow! Cherubs blew the doors off the place.

Good noisy rock still has to have a driving rhythm section and Cherubs definitely had that going. We met the drummer, Brent, when we got to the show and he put on quite a display of smacking those skins into submission. He and the bass player, Owen, created a driving, propulsive attack that allows Kevin, the singer/guitarist to do his thing.

It was a small crowd, but full of friends. So nice to see EJ, the first Hillbilly drummer, there last night. I hadn’t seen him for a long time. It brought back some memories, for sure, standing there next to him watching a great band. We certainly did enough of that between 1992 and 1998. I have probably forgotten some of the shows we saw and played together.

What a treat, though, to see such a cool band doing their thing at the top of their game. It was inspiring. I’m not sure what noisy loud band I can do to add my part into the stratosphere, but I’d like to add some more stuff before I’m done. I know Hillbilly has a few more things to say, but maybe another band, too? Brand New Christ could offer a few things. We have six songs just sitting there rotting.

This morning brought some nice surprises, though. Heard from some friends about music they are doing and got an offer to make some music, too. It’s in the air right now, I guess. Sometimes the universe says, “Hello. You’re doing it wrong. Here’s a way to do it right.”

My thoughts are with my brother, Matt, today and my grandmother, Amy. I am hoping that they both get the help they need to be safe and comfortable and moving on to the next stages of their lives. I know there is nothing I can do except be here if they need me.

Going to see my first Phoenix Rising match tonight. I am excited about it. I enjoy soccer/futbol quite a bit and it will be great to be a part of the atmosphere tonight. Who knows…maybe a new team to root for?

My sports vacation has continued, by the way. I was tempted to listen a bit to sports talk yesterday but opted for music again. I don’t really miss it, but the Suns rumor mill is going crazy again right now. I have to remind myself that this was what was going on all summer last year with the Kevin Durant rumors. They blew their wad, though, and there will be no big trades this year for another superstar.

The one thing I do know, though, is that the Suns are not winning any championships anytime soon. They don’t have the horses to compete with the Nuggets anytime soon. I’m guessing nobody really will for the next few years if they can stay healthy. They are a damn good team and fun to watch even though I hate them.

Not really.

See you tomorrow.

Cherubs. Two blurry and one ol' yeller.
