Dear Friends,
What a silly title for today’s blog. I came up with it as I was lamenting my inability to fall asleep last night. I was working on a piece for a new website/publication and my brain was going about ten million miles per hour. I hate those situations, but I also love them. When the creative bug strikes, it feels so good, but it is hard to come down.
It’s not as bad as when I was younger and liked to play around with things that made you stay awake all night. I don’t miss that nonsense at all, but creative brain is a tough thing to tame when it comes time to go night night. Really, there is no taming it.
Lately, I’ve been using reruns of How I Met Your Mother to fall asleep. I was a big fan of the show when it came out, but now, not so much. I think it’s because I want to repeatedly punch the main character and the rest of the cast is just annoying at this point. I’m a Jason Segel fan, too, but I’ve grown to really loathe his character on that particular show.
I also have a hard time with Doogie Howser, too. For a moment there I couldn’t remember Neil Patrick Harris’ name. He’s not “Doogie” anymore, I suppose. The “Barney” character on HIMYM is just grating at this point. While I was watching the other day, I was thinking about the whole argument in Hollywood these days that actors who aren’t gay shouldn’t play gay roles. While I agree that every actor out there should get a fair and equal chance to make a living, gay/straight/whatever, I don’t know that I agree that only gay actors should play gay roles. Isn’t acting all about being someone you are not?
I’m not going down that rabbit death trap, though. Not today, not ever. I’ve been awake for a long time, so I don’t need to be “woke.”
I discovered yesterday that one of my students can’t read and doesn’t know his numbers, either. YAY! He shouldn’t be in fourth grade, but here he is. YAY! I am totally happy to help him but he’s going to take up time from my other students. Lots of time, to be honest, and it sucks that he has gotten passed through to this point with zero skills. I need to talk to his teacher from last year and pronto.
Other than that, my day today will consist of working with kids, then coming home and writing a lot. Tomorrow, I will write some more and play a little music, then repeat those two things on Sunday, too. After this weekend, I can take a tiny break from journalism and get back into some fiction.
Good stuff, Maynard.
Happy Friday.
I hope I don’t fall asleep today while teaching math, but it could happen.
See you tomorrow.
