Entry date: 12-20-2023 – It’s a Rocket Ship – Letters to My Friends

Dear Friends,

Robin Williams made a lot of good movies. I don’t know why I am thinking about him right now, but every once in a while, the phrase, “It’s a rocket ship!” jumps into my brain and I can’t help but think about Rainbow Randolph. Hell, even Ed Norton was pretty great in Death To Smoochy, too.

If you haven’t seen Death To Smoochy, do yourself a favor and seek it out. It was originally released in 2002 and was directed by Danny DeVito. It’s dark and fun and Williams is at his crazy best. Kind of like Cable Guy, it was a bit too dark for most people, but after time, has become something of a cult favorite. If you watch it and don’t like it, I’m sorry. I’ll take the blame.

It’s still a “rocket ship,” though.

My students want me dead. I’m sure of it. Not all, but some. They want me to just crumble into a thousand pieces, pierced by their non-stop chittering about whatever it is they chitter chatter about while I’m trying to teach the ones who want to learn.

They are so wound up. I need to remind myself that, for some of them, two weeks off school is a long time to be without structure and predictability. I forget that they are stressed about things they don’t even realize they are stressed about because they are picking up on their parents’ stress or worse.

I’ll be more patient today.

I found little con man, Cocaine Baby, wandering around the cafeteria today instead of being in the “in-school suspension” room. He told the nice lady there that he needed some milk, but that was a lie. He’s extremely lactose intolerant and knows it quite well. I get one more day of a break with him tomorrow and then he’s back to being mine on Thursday.

Yay for me.

I’m tired of bitching about that stuff, though. I’m just fucking tired. It’s been a long few weeks. The upcoming break is coming at the right time. I’m not doing much to help myself, either. I haven’t been the healthiest guy as of late. Eating sugar and drinking beer. I’m going to do another dry January, though, so that’ll help, and the sweets will be gone, too.

I’ll also be getting back to walking and doing more things to make myself feel a lot better. I could start today, but why miss out on Christmas cheer? No sense messing that up.

Holiday Poem #1

I got decked once

In a VFW hall.

It was winter time

And Christmas money

Paid for the show.

Dizzy and down.

“Get him up,” I heard.

“You ok?”

I nodded and felt the blood

With my tongue on my upper lip.

My nose was a mess.

A red wreath formed around my mouth.

I had a smile so wide

You could drive a new toy tonka through it.

In a minute, I was gone.

Here’s to a short, good day today. Off to see Granny after work and then some time in the backyard, probably, too. It’s bulk trash time.

See you tomorrow.

I always loved this flyer I made. I don't remember the show very well, but I love the flyer.
